Getting cited by AI: the new distribution channel

LLMs increasingly send real referral traffic. Here is how placement across niche-relevant sites improves your odds of being cited.

Search is splitting in two. Alongside Google's familiar ten blue links, answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini now synthesize answers directly — and, increasingly, cite the sources they used and send clicks back to them.

Why placement matters more, not less

LLMs don't read one page; they draw from many. The more high-quality, topically-relevant sites carry your perspective and your phrasing, the more likely your framing is the one that surfaces inside an answer. Being on five relevant sites beats being on one, even a big one.

What actually earns a citation

  • Topical density. Appear on sites the model already treats as authoritative for the niche.
  • Clear, quotable claims. Answer engines lift concise, self-contained sentences. Write them.
  • Structured content. Headings, lists, and definitions are easier to extract and attribute.
  • Freshness. Recently published or updated pages are disproportionately cited.

Track the citations, don't guess

Most teams have no idea whether an LLM ever sent them a visitor. Niched attributes referrals from every major answer engine to the exact placement that earned them, so you learn which topics and which sites actually produce AI mentions — and double down on what works.

You can't optimize for AI visibility you can't see.
